Jeffries criticized the proposal as “overly broad,” suggesting it might inadvertently hinder humanitarian efforts and undermine counter-terrorism initiatives against militant organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Similarly, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar has voiced his opposition to the proposal, though he noted the need for a reassessment of US-Israel relations. Aguilar pointed out that Israel’s current policies have led to increased regional isolation. This stance contrasts with Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar, who has called on legislators to support the amendment, arguing that US taxpayer dollars should not fund Israel’s military activities. Meanwhile, Jeffries has also advocated for a “major reset” in the relationship between the US and Israel. He supports Israel’s right to exist but also calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Jeffries suggests that future US military aid should be contingent upon compliance with human rights standards and should take into account Israel’s capacity to shoulder more of its defense expenses.
