A recent two-day meeting provided a platform for 18 representatives from OPCW National Authorities in Eastern European Member States to engage in vital discussions on national legislation, capacity-building programs, and contemporary issues related to chemical safety and international collaboration. The event focused on practical challenges and best practices involved in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, aiming to enhance regional cooperation. A significant part of the agenda included discussions on the effects of artificial intelligence and the critical role academia plays in ensuring chemical safety and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
Slovenia’s active cooperation with the OPCW is noteworthy, as it consistently enforces the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and mandates their destruction under international oversight. The Convention, with 193 States Parties, aims to eliminate chemical weapons and prevent their future use, making it one of the most successful international agreements. The Slovenian Chemicals Office is tasked with implementing this at the national level, supervising industrial activities involving strategic chemicals, and working with the OPCW to conduct international inspections.
On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the governing body tasked with promoting adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Slovenia’s two-year term on the council will focus on preventing the spread of chemical weapons and bolstering trust and security within the global community. In his opening remarks at the OPCW Regional Meeting in Ljubljana, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs highlighted Slovenia’s priorities, which include supporting the development of new technologies and ensuring the peaceful and safe use of chemistry.
Slovenia’s collaboration with the OPCW, including its role in co-organizing the regional meeting, underscores its dedication to maintaining high standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes. This commitment is further reinforced by Slovenia’s new position on the OPCW Executive Council, where it aims to play a significant role in international efforts to prevent the proliferation of chemical weapons.
