Spotify is set to implement new strategies to identify and manage AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, profiles and track listings of AI-created artist identities will feature an “AI persona” label. This initiative is part of Spotify’s efforts to help users distinguish between authentic musicians and AI-generated identities, and to protect real artists from losing visibility due to the influx of AI content.
The streaming giant has announced that by default, these AI personas will not be included in personalized recommendations. This decision seeks to address the growing presence of AI-generated music, which can obscure genuine performers. Additionally, Spotify will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. To ensure transparency and accuracy, the platform plans to use a combination of human review and AI technology to identify AI personas that have not been disclosed.
This move is a response to the rapid increase in AI-generated music. Previously, Spotify reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a year, underscoring the significant amount of artificial and low-quality content entering the music streaming space. The introduction of these measures indicates Spotify’s commitment to maintaining a quality experience for its users by minimizing the impact of non-human-generated content.
As the use of generative AI in music production becomes more prevalent, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. Listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether the creators behind the music they enjoy are actual human artists or AI-generated identities. By implementing these new measures, Spotify aims to provide clarity and maintain trust with its audience, ensuring that the platform remains a space where genuine artists can thrive and be discovered.
