Netanyahu Highlights Security Concerns After Flydubai Co-Pilot Incident

by admin477351

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has raised alarm over potential security gaps after an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain during a flydubai flight to Tel Aviv. Netanyahu suggested that the co-pilot might have been radicalized by Islamist ideology, highlighting the need for improved screening processes for pilots flying to Israel.

The incident occurred on Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board. The co-pilot reportedly assaulted the captain, causing the aircraft to lose significant altitude before the captain managed to regain control. Passengers assisted in restraining the co-pilot while another pilot took over the controls.

According to Netanyahu, preliminary investigations indicate that the co-pilot underwent “radical indoctrination.” He further mentioned that the co-pilot made statements suggesting suicidal intentions. This event has prompted a reevaluation of the procedures for vetting pilots from countries without formal diplomatic ties to Israel.

Netanyahu also noted that Israeli authorities had previously conducted background checks on pilots for certain flights, but following this incident, they plan to review and potentially enhance these screening measures. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining possible connections between the co-pilot and Iran. Netanyahu cautioned that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, with more information expected to emerge in the coming days.
